Petite Protea exists, in large part, because I became a mom. For eleven years I traveled the world, visiting artisan communities across Africa, Southeast Asia, and beyond. I was moved by what I saw — women with extraordinary skill, extraordinary resilience, and very few outlets to share their work with the wider world. When my daughters arrived and my world changed shape, I knew what I wanted to build: a bridge between those women and people who would treasure what they make.
So when Mother's Day comes around, I think about all of it at once. I think about my own mother. I think about the mothers I met in Damaraland, in Zambia, in Uganda. I think about my daughters watching me build this. And I think about what it means to give a gift that carries all of that — story, craft, care, and intention.
