Meet Malachite: The Stone That Stops You in Your Tracks

The earth spent millions of years making this one.

There are stones you glance at, and stones that make you stop mid-scroll, mid-step, mid-breath. Malachite is the second kind.

With its deep, swirling greens, no two pieces ever look the same. It's the stone that Renaissance painters ground into pigment, that Egyptian pharaohs wore as armor, that Russian tsars used to line entire palace walls. And now it's the latest addition to our Stone Series — and we think it might be our most stunning yet.

What Is Malachite?

Malachite is a vivid green copper carbonate mineral, formed deep underground where copper-rich water meets limestone over millions of years. That process is what creates its signature banded, swirling patterns — from pale mint to deep forest green — and why every single piece is completely one of a kind.

It sits at a 3.5–4 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it softer than many gemstones and all the more precious for it. It belongs to the copper mineral family and is fully opaque, with a surface that seems almost painted by hand.

It's geology that looks like art.

A Stone With Thousands of Years of History

Long before it became a jewelry staple, malachite was considered one of the most powerful stones on earth.

In ancient Egypt, it was ground into powder and used as eye paint — worn by pharaohs not just for beauty, but for protection. It was believed to ward off evil and sharpen the vision of those who wore it.

During the Renaissance, painters prized malachite as a source of vivid green pigment. It appeared in the robes of madonnas, the backgrounds of altarpieces, the leaves of illuminated manuscripts.

In Imperial Russia, Tsar Nicholas I was so captivated by the stone that the Malachite Room of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg was lined entirely with it. The columns, the fireplaces, the decorative panels — all malachite. It became a symbol of power, luxury, and untameable beauty.

Malachite has never needed an introduction. It has always announced itself.

Three Varieties, Three Stories

What makes malachite so endlessly fascinating is that it doesn't come in just one form. Depending on how it formed, the same mineral can look entirely different — and carry an entirely different energy.

Banded Malachite is the variety most people picture first. Rich, concentric rings ripple across the surface like the rings of a ancient tree. Each band represents a different period of formation — depth made visible. It pairs beautifully with emerald, cream, and black tones.

Botryoidal Malachite is where things get truly sculptural. Named from the Greek word for "grape cluster," botryoidal malachite forms in rounded, bubble-like masses that are raw, textural, and wildly organic. It looks almost alive. It pairs strikingly with aged brass, gold, and forest green.

Flower Banded Malachite is the rarest of the three — and the most breathtaking. Circular, petal-like formations bloom across the surface in patterns that look almost intentional. Almost designed. It's the variety that collectors seek out, and the one that tends to stop people cold. It pairs elegantly with ivory, rose gold, and sage.

What This Stone Carries With It

Beyond its visual beauty, malachite has long been associated with transformation, protection, and the heart.

Transformation & Change. Malachite is often called the stone of transformation — believed to support bold life changes, encourage growth through discomfort, and help release patterns that no longer serve you. If you're in a season of becoming, this is a stone worth having close.

Protection & Clarity. Historically carried as a protective amulet across many cultures, malachite is thought to absorb negative energy and sharpen intuition. A guide through uncertain terrain.

Heart Opening. Deeply connected to the heart chakra, malachite is associated with compassion, emotional healing, and the kind of courage it takes to love — and live — fully.

How to Wear Your Malachite

Malachite is one of those rare stones that works across styles — bold enough to anchor a look, distinctive enough to be a conversation piece, and versatile enough to layer.

A few of our favourite ways to wear it:

Pair it with gold, as seen in this necklace. The warmth of the metal makes the green sing in a way that silver simply can't match.

Let it stand alone. Malachite doesn't need supporting acts. A single statement piece — a pendant, a cuff, a pair of earrings — is often the most powerful choice.

Layer with neutrals. Cream, ivory, sand, camel. These tones give the green room to breathe and let the pattern speak for itself. See for yourself with our Triangle Charm Bracelet featuring Malachite and handmade by Maasai women in Tanzania.

Caring for Your Malachite

Because malachite is softer than many gemstones, it asks for a little more care — and gives back beautifully in return.

Clean gently. Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Avoid soaps, chemical cleaners, and ultrasonic devices entirely.

Keep it dry. Remove your malachite before washing your hands, swimming, bathing, or any activity involving water. Moisture can dull the surface over time.

Store it separately. Keep in a soft pouch, away from harder stones that could scratch the surface.

Protect it from heat. Prolonged sun exposure and heat can cause the colour to fade. Store away from windowsills and direct light.

Refer to our Jewelry Care page for details on all of our pieces.

Finding Your Piece

Every stone in our Malachite collection has been chosen for its pattern, its depth, and the way it catches the light. No two are the same — which means yours truly will be one of a kind.

Whether you're drawn to the meditative rings of Banded, the sculptural texture of Botryoidal, or the rare bloom of Flower Banded, there's a malachite waiting for you.

The earth spent millions of years on it. It's ready when you are.
