Vattea

There is jewelry that is worn — and then there is jewelry that is felt. Vattea is the latter. Born in Medellín, Colombia in 2016, this women-led, ethical jewelry brand was founded by sisters Laura and Ana María Maya Silva alongside filmmaker Fredy Arenas, from a shared love of art, design, and the rich craft traditions of their homeland. Drawing inspiration from ancestral cultures, indigenous symbols, and the vibrant colors of Colombian folklore, Vattea creates handmade earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and brooches that celebrate the warmth and strength of women. Each piece begins as brass, individually textured or polished by hand, then bathed in 24-karat gold — and it is the cotton thread work that sets Vattea truly apart: hand-sewn and starched using natural starches through a proprietary technique developed over years of artisan research. Every step of the process is carried out with intention — and with community. Vattea's fair trade production is powered by local women, including mothers and formerly incarcerated women, who work from home or in the studio, earning dignified wages through sustainable, skilled craft.
