There are stones mined across a dozen countries, and stones found in exactly one place on the entire planet. Tanzanite is the second kind.
It exists in a single, narrow stretch of land at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro — nowhere else on Earth has a deposit ever been found. It's the newest addition to our Stone Series. We have a handful of pieces now, with a much larger collection arriving this fall.
What Is Tanzanite?
Tanzanite is a blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite, colored by trace amounts of vanadium and brought to life through heat treatment that intensifies its signature color. It sits at a 6–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale — moderately durable, but soft enough that it asks for a little more care than a diamond or sapphire.
Its color shifts with the light: deep sapphire blue in one moment, violet-purple in the next. No two stones ever read quite the same way twice.
A Stone Discovered by Accident
Tanzanite has one of the youngest stories of any gemstone on Earth.
It was discovered in 1967 in the Merelani Hills, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro — found by chance, by local prospectors who initially mistook it for sapphire. Tiffany & Co. recognized what they had, named the stone after the only country it's ever been found in, and introduced it to the world soon after.
Nearly sixty years later, that same small stretch of land remains the only known source of tanzanite on the planet. Some geologists estimate the known deposits could be exhausted within our lifetime — a stone that, unlike nearly any other, may someday simply run out.
Three Colors in One Stone
Tilt a tanzanite in the light and it doesn't just sparkle — it changes.
This is called trichroism: depending on the angle, the same stone can flash blue, violet, and a deep burgundy-red. Cutters orient each stone to bring out the blue-violet most people recognize, but catch it from the side and you'll glimpse the other two colors hiding just beneath the surface.
It's a stone with more than one story to tell, depending on how you choose to look at it.
What This Stone Carries With It
Beyond its rarity, tanzanite has long been associated with transformation, intuition, and spiritual awakening.
Transformation. Tanzanite is often considered a high-vibration stone — one believed to support major life transitions and help release old patterns to make room for what's next.
Intuition & Insight. Connected to the third eye, tanzanite is thought to sharpen intuition and deepen self-awareness, offering clarity during moments of change.
Calm. Its cooling blue-violet tones are associated with calming an overactive mind and easing anxiety — a stone meant to steady you, not just adorn you.
